I started fishing properly at the age of 11 making bus trips to the River Torne and Cusworth Lakes near Doncaster.
For years my mates and I fish for bites, match style and would often catch more than the adults on the same venues. Influenced by the England squad fishing the world champs I bought my first pole. At the time I had never seen anyone pole fishing.
The resurrection of the River Don was a dream come true and from 1986 my mates and I fished regularly for the Roach using the stick float.
In 1988 I moved to Basingstoke and for a couple of years fished the Kennet and Thames. Although I caught decent Barbel and good Chub, my light line approach would often result in lost fish.
Back in Doncaster in 1991 I continued fishing the River Don's Roach population. When the EA stocked Barbel in '92 they became a regular feature in my catches.
In 1995 I began targeting the Carp in Cusworth Lake and managed to catch the biggest two fish in the lake on the same day. After only 3 months I was bored of Carping and the Barbel were growing in the Don so my attentions turned back to the river.
Since passing my driving test in 2002 I feel the world is my Oyster and can't fish enough! Although I enjoy traveling and fishing venues that offer a better chance of big fish, such as the Trent, I still crave that elusive River Don double figure Barbel.
